Serendipity

Serenedipity, a nice word and I kind of fancy with it. The word was formed from the Persian fairy tale, The Three Princes of Serendip, whose heroes "were always making discoveries by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of".

File:Serendipity poster.jpgIn 2001, Peter Chelsom directed a romantic comedy of the same wording as the film title. The story tells of a couple reunite years after the night they first met in New York City, fell in love and separated, convinced that one day they will end up together.

Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) meets Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) by chance in the Christmas eve, in Bloomingdale's, both trying to buy the last pair of black cashmere gloves available for sales. Despite each being in a relationship with other people at the time, they spend an amazing afternoon together and attracted to each other. Jonathan wants her contact information "just in case", but Sara, a fatalist, plays games of fate with Jonathan to determine if they are indeed meant to be together.

Sara decides to write her contact information in a book, Love in the Time of Cholera and his on a five dollars bill. She gives the bill to a newspaperman and she says that she would sell the book in a New York used books store. If they are meant to be together, he will find the book, she will find the five dollars bill and they will find their way back to each other.

Life is not merely a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences,
but rather it is a tapestry of acts that culminate in an exquisite, sublime plan.

If we are to live life in harmony with the universe,
we must all possess a powerful faith in what the ancients used to call "fatum",
what we currently refer to as destiny.

WHEN YOU KNOW - Shawn Colvin

When you know that you know who you love, you can't deny it.
Or go back, or give up, or pretend that you don't buy it.
When it's clear this time you've found the one, you'll never let him go
Cos you know and you know that you know.

When you feel in your skin in your bones and the hollow
Of your heart, there's no way you can wait till tomorrow.
When there isn't any doubt about it once you come this close
Cos you know and you know that you know.

You can feel love surround you like the sky 'round the moon.
This is how love has found you, now you know what to do.

When you know that you know who you need, you can't deny it.
Or go back, or give up, or pretend that you don't buy it.
When it's clear this time you've found the one, you'll never let him go
Cos you know and you know that you know.

And it's time you come in from the cold.
Haaa ...
And you know that you know.

The Green Mile

File:Green mile.jpgDirector Frank Darabont, who made an acclaimed feature film debut with The Shawshank Redemption (1994), returns for a second feature, The Green Mile, an American drama film based on 1996 Stephen King novel of the same title released on December 10, 1999.

The movie is told in flashback by the protagonist in a nursing home. In 1935, inmates at the Cold Mountain Correctional Facility call Death Row "The Green Mile" because of the dark green linoleum that tiles the floor.

It's just another normal day on the Green Mile, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) is the head guard on the Green Mile when a new inmate, John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), a giant black man convicted of raping and killing two young white girls, arrives on death row. John shows all the characteristics of being a "gentle giant": eight feet tall with his hands the size of waffle irons, shy, soft-spoken, fearing darkness and crying often. A person who behaves more like an innocent child than a hardened criminal.

Soon Paul and two of his fellow guards, Brutus "Brutal" Howell (David Morse) and Dean Stanton (Barry Pepper), learns that there is more about John. Someone who displays inexplicable healing and empathetic abilities, leading them to wonder just what sort of person John could be that he have committed the crimes with which he was charged.

Justice isn't always just
but the most incredible thing about miracles is that they happen.

The Butterfly Effect

File:Butterflyeffect poster.jpgSome people want to forgot about the past and some people want to change it.

The Butterfly Effect is an American science fiction psychological thriller film that was written and directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber (screenwriters for Final Destination 2) released on January 23, 2004. The title was inspired by the short story, A Sound of Thunder by Ray Bradbury and refers to the butterfly effect, a popular hypothetical example of chaos theory which illustrates how relatively minor changes may lead to large changes overtime.

Evan Treborn(Ashton Kutcher) grows up in a small town with his single, working mother and his friends, Kayleigh Miller (Amy Smart), Lenny Kagan (Elden Henson) and Tommy Miller (William Lee Scott). As a kid, he suffers from memory blackouts where he suddenly finds himself somewhere else and confused. Since the age of seven, he has detail his life in a journal.

One day at college he starts to read one of his old diaries, and suddenly a flashback hits him like a brick. When he discovers he can travel back in time in order to set things right, he attempts to set things right for himself and his friends. However, there are unintended consequences for all, harming those he cares about and realizes that the main cause of everyone's suffering in all the different timelines is himself.

At the end of the film, Evan purposely travels back in time one final time to the moment of his birth when he was in his mother's womb. Evan decides to kill himself and thus he was never born. Without him ever being born, Kayleigh and her brother Tommy decide to live with their mom going on to have happy lives and Lenny also grows up happy without Tommy's destructive presence. Evan's mother later on had a daughter. Earlier in the film Evan's mother mentioned that she had two stillbirths before him. This suggests that their father's abilities were passed down to each of them and they all made the same decision in the end, to never have been born at all.

Life is a journey, not a destination.
Be present in all things and thankful for all things.

A Thousand Words

A Thousand Words PosterWhat if you only have a thousand words left? And what will matters most to you?

A Thousand Words is a comedy-drama film starring Eddie Murphy and directed by Brian Robbins released on March 9, 2012. Jack McCall (Eddie Murphy) is a fast-talking literary agent, who uses his 'gift of gab' to get various book deals, any time and any way.

One morning, Jack finds an unusual Bodhi tree with a thousand leaves mysteriously appears in his backyard after an encounter with a spiritual guru, Dr. Sinja (Cliff Curtis). With every word Jack utters, a leaf falls from the tree and he realizes that when the last leaf falls, both he and the tree are toast. In time, he finds that even written words count towards his limit; plus anything that happens to the tree will also affect him. When Jack tries to cut it down with an axe, an axe wound appears on him. When squirrels climb on the tree, it tickles him. When a gardener tries to poison it with DDT and Jack gets high on the fumes.

Words have never failed Jack McCall, but now he's got to stop talking and conjure up some outrageous ways to communicate or he's a goner. His choice of words communicating with others becomes difficult and have affected in his career, work, marriage with his wife Caroline (Kerry Washington) and friendships.

With his life falling apart and the tree running out of leaves, Jack goes to Dr. Sinja and asks how to end the curse. The guru tells him to make peace in all of his relationships. With just one branch of leaves left, Jack tries to reconcile with Caroline and visits his mother (Ruby Dee), who lives in an assisted-living center and has dementia. She tells Jack, who she thinks is Jack’s late father Raymond, that she wishes Jack would stop being angry at his father for walking out on them when he was a kid. Jack, realizing that this is the relationship that needs the most mending and goes to visit his father’s grave. Jack expends the last three leaves of the tree with the words, "I forgive you". With no leaves remaining, Jack collapses and appears to have died.

You never know if
the last time you see someone is going to be
the last time you ever see someone.

The Rose

File:The Rose 1979.jpgWhile searching for the song, The Rose by Bette Midler in the website and found that it is a soundtrack of a movie film with the same title. An American musical drama film directed by Mark Rydell and was released on November 9, 1979.

JANIS JOPLIN
The film tells the story of a self-destructive 1960s rock star, modeled after the late Janis Joplin (January 19, 1943 - October 4, 1970) who was known as "The Queen of Rock and Roll" as well as "The Queen of Psychedelic Soul".

Bette Midler stars as Mary Rose Foster in this somber drama who plays an ill-fated singer who struggles to cope with the constant pressures or rather succumbs to the pressures of her career and the demands of her ruthless British manager,Campbell Rudge (Alan Bates) by indulging in drugs and alcohol. Her sweetheart Huston Dyer (Frederic Forrest) is the former chauffeur who naively tries to save her from self destruction, while her British manager is ultimately blamed for not preventing her inevitable fall. Her rock and roll lifestyle of drugs, sex, and rock and roll and constant touring lead her to an inevitable breakdown.

On October 4, 1970, she was found dead at the age of twenty-seven and the official cause of her death was an overdose of heroin. The story mirrors any one of a number of popular singers who have fallen victim to the excess of success.

Movie Trailer:

THE ROSE - Bette Midler

Some say love it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
And you it's only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance

It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give
And the soul afraid of dying
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong

Just remember in the winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed
That with the sun's love
In the spring becomes the rose

Driving Miss Daisy

Driving Miss Daisy is an American comedy-drama film released on December 15, 1989 directed by Bruce Beresford and adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Alfred Uhry of the same name.

In 1948, after a driving mishap, a reluctantly seventy-two years old wealthy Jewish widow, Daisy Werthan (Jessica Tandy) can no longer drive because no insurance company will cover her. Her son, Boolie Werthan (Dan Aykroyd) tells  her she will have to get a chauffeur, which in that time meant a black man (the racial attitudes and prejudices of that time).

An African-American man, Hoke colburn (Morgan Freeman) was hired by Boolie as Ms Daisy's new chauffeur against his mother protests. Miss Daisy at first refuses to let Hoke drive her, going so far as to walk to the local supermarket, Piggly Wiggly with Hoke following her by automobile, much to her chagrin. Her reluctance to be driven around is because she is embarrassed that people might think she is either too elderly to drive or so well off that she can pay for a driver. Out of necessity, Miss Daisy gradually starts to accept Hoke and the fact that she needs him to drive her around.

A wealthy, strong-willed Southern matron and her equally indomitable Black chauffeur. Both have a different back groups. Hoke because of his skin color, Miss Daisy because she is Jewish in a WASP-dominated society. At the same time, Hoke cannot fathom Miss Daisy's cloistered inability to grasp the social changes that are sweeping the South in the 1960s. Nor can Miss Daisy understand why Hoke's "people" are so indignant. Even though they continued to bicker, an unlikely remarkable friendship was beginning to form between them as the years pass.

Friendship isn't about whom you have known the longest ... ...
It's about who came and never left your side ... ...

Puncture

File:Puncture Poster.jpgPuncture is an independent feature film starring Chris Evans, directed by Adam Kassen and Mark Kassen and was released on April 21, 2011. The film was based on the true story of Michael David 'Mike' Weiss and Paul Danziger set in Year 1998. A David-versus-Goliath tale.

Mike Weiss (Chris Evans) is a talented young Houston lawyer and a functioning drug addict.  Paul Danziger (co-director Mark Kassen), his longtime friend and partner who is a family man with a pregnant wife. They decided to take on a case when nurse Vicky Rogers (Vinessa Shaw) seeks them out and they learn that she has contracted AIDS a couple of years ago when accidentally pin pricked with a contaminated needle by a violent patient on the job.

Vicky shows an auto retractable safety needle invented by engineer, Jeffrey Matthew Dancort (Marshall Bell) who owns the Safety Point Company, but is unable to sell his product to any hospital because the Group Purchasing Organization (GPO) refused to adopt to his new, more expensive and safer syringes. As Mike and Paul dig deeper into the case and soon, they see all the doors closed in their fight against the powerful mafia of the medical supply system; a health care and pharmaceutical conspiracy teeters on exposure and heavyweight attorneys move in on the defense. Out of their league but invested in their own principles, the mounting pressure of the case pushes the two underdog lawyers and their business to the breaking point.

Michael "Mike" David Weiss
The show ends when Mike was found died from a drug overdose in his home and the case was later handle by attorney Mark Laniel (Mark Laniel himself) to the court.

In 2004, Mark settled the lawsuit against one of nation's largest GPO and its medical supply manufacturers for over USD150 million. As a result, thousands of hospitals throughout the United States now use safety needles. Many hospitals continue to use conventional syringes resulting in many accidental needle sticks and deaths. In poor countries, the plastic syringe still gets reused hundreds of times and is responsible for millions of new HIV/AIDS infections each year.

This film is dedicated to Michael David Weiss (1967 - October 2, 1999). A lawyer, genius, fool, son, brother, visionary, playboy, madman, druggie and friend.

“I am only one, but still I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something;
and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.”
"Sometimes the brightest light comes from the darkest places."

Just The Way You Are

JUST THE WAY YOU ARE - Billy Joel

Don't go changing, to try and please me
You never let me down before
Don't imagine you're too familiar
And I don't see you anymore

I wouldn't leave you in times of trouble
We never could have come this far
I took the good times, I'll take the bad times
I'll take you just the way you are

Don't go trying some new fashion
Don't change the color of your hair
You always have my unspoken passion
Although I might not seem to care

I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are

I need to know that you will always be
The same old someone that I knew
What will it take till you believe in me
The way that I believe in you

I said I love you and that's forever
And this I promise from the heart
I could not love you any better
I love you just the way you are

I don't want clever conversation
I never want to work that hard
I just want someone that I can talk to
I want you just the way you are

Make Every Second Count

Each day is a gift and not a given right
Leave no stone unturned
Leave your fears behind
And try to take the path less traveled by
That first step you take is the longest stride

If today was our last day and tomorrow was too late
Could we say goodbye to yesterday?
Would we live each moment like our last
Leave old pictures in the past?
Donate every dime we had, if today was the last day?
What if, what if, if today was our last day?

Against the grain should be a way of life
What's worth the price is always worth the fight
Every second counts 'cause there's no second try
So live like we are never living twice
Don't take the free ride in our own life

If today was our last day
Would we make our mark by mending a broken heart?
We know it's never too late to shoot for the stars
Regardless of who we are

So do whatever it takes
'Cause we can't rewind a moment in this life
Let nothing stand in our way
'Cause the hands of time are never on our side

If today was our last day and tomorrow was too late
And would we call those friends we never see?
Reminisce old memories?
Would we forgive our enemies?
And would we find that one we are dreaming of?
Swear up and down to God above
That we would finally fall in love if today was our last day?

Source Code

Source Code is a 2011 American science fiction techno-thriller film directed by Duncan Jones, written by Ben Ripley which released on April 1, 2011.

The story starts when soldier Captain Colter Stevens (Jake Gyllenhaal) wakes up in the body of an unknown man on a commuter train traveling to Chicago. After eight minutes, a bomb goes off on the train and he awakens to find himself strapped inside a small geodesic dome. Through a screen, Air Force Capt. Colleen Goodwin (Vera Farmiga) explains to him that he is actually Colter Stevens, a decorated army helicopter pilot, now on a mission using Source Code to discover the location of a bomb aboard the train and identify the bomber who detonated it which destroyed a train headed into Chicago.

Stevens has no memory of how he became involved in the Source Code project; his last memory is of flying in a recent mission in Afghanistan while taking on enemy gunfire. In an assignment unlike any of he's ever known, he learns that the train explosion occurred two months after an incident in Afghanistan which reportedly killed him. And his body are in fact on life-support at the Source Code facility while his mind is hooked up to a computer system, the cockpit being a mental projection of his own mind to cope with the experience of a compatible man's life for the last eight minutes within an alternate timeline. Angered to discover this, Stevens requests that his life support be terminated after the mission is completed.

Stevens re-lives the incident over and over again through different people until he manages to foil another attack and in the process unexpectedly falls in love with one of the passengers, Christina Warren (Michelle Monaghan).

Stevens ask Christina what will she do if she knew she had less than one minute to live and she reply "I'd make those seconds count". Stevens and Christina kiss in the last seconds before the eight-minute mark. In that instant, Goodwin disables his life support per his request and the scene reveals his actual, physical body as severely mutilated and comatose. Time freezes, but to Stevens' surprise, find himself finishing the kiss,  still aboard the train with Christina, saving the rest of the passengers which all remains in the alternate timeline (universe).

Make Every Second Count
Life can be long or short, it all depends on how we choose to live it.
It's like forever, always changing.
For any of us our forever could end in an hour or a hundred years from now.
We can never know for sure, so make every second count.
What we have to decide is how we want our life to be.
If our forever was ending tomorrow and how would we have want it to spent.

I'II Follow You Into The Dark

File:Death Cab For Cutie - Plans.png
A song by Death Cab for Cutie (an American alternative rock band formed in Bellingham, Washington in 1997) from their fifth album Plans. Written and performed by lead singer Benjamin "Ben" Gibbard (born August 11, 1976) who wrote this song at the age of nearing 29 and had never lost anyone really special in his life.

The concept and creation of the song found in Wikipedia:

"It's just this idea that what if somebody dies and we're just floating, just stumbling around in infinite darkness, and I'm just trying to find some kind of spiritual kind of peace with myself, and the world." ~ Ben Gibbard

It's comes to my mind when I first heard of this song; the kind of love that transcends time when someone special in life died and trying to find some comfort of peace. However, there's a lot more hidden messages in this song in the website that depends on individual interpretations on different encounters and experiences in life which will remains as mystery.

I will always be there for you when you are uncertain,
even into the greatest uncertainty of all ... ... death.

I'LL FOLLOW YOU INTO THE DARK - Ben Gibbard

Love of mine some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the No's on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

In Catholic school as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son fear is the heart of love"
So I never went back

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the No's on their vacancy signs

If there's no one to guide you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about 'cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the No's on their vacancy signs

If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark
